Special Projects

  1. Cherokee Rose Garden Club Plant Swap:

    The club organizes and hosts a community-wide plant swap in September.
  2. Westmont Elementary School Gardens:

    Members helped design, maintain and provide supplies for the courtyard gardens. The club provides monetary donations to purchase additional plants and supplies.
  3. Kentwood Nursing Home Garden Therapy:

    Members develop, coordinate and present garden related activities to the residents of the nursing home. The club provides donations for plants and supplies.
  4. Cherokee Rose Friendship Flower:

    The club has established small groups made up of members for the purpose getting to know each other better strengthening friendship.

Programs and Activities

  1. Monthly Garden Club Programs:

    Garden related programs are presented at meetings by guest speakers or members.
  2. Horticulture Program:

    Tidbits on horticulture are presented monthly by the Horticulture committee.
  3. Birds and Butterflies Program:

    A short program on birds and/or butterflies is presented monthly by the Birds and Butterflies Committee.
  4. Monthly Fundraiser:

    A door prize drawing is held monthly to raise money for the club's projects, donations and activities.
  5. Christmas Luncheon:

    A Christmas luncheon and gift exchange is held to promote Christmas cheer and friendship. Family and friends are invited.
  6. Annual Potluck Lunch and Plant Swap:

    An annual potluck and plant swap is held in June to promote friendship and share plants. Each participant provides basic information about the plant and its care.

Activities, Projects and Donations

  1. Sacred Heart Garden Festival:

    Members serve on festival committees, participate in and serve as volunteers at the Festival of Flowers.
  2. Local Flower Shows:

    Members are encouraged to serve on committees and submit entries.
  3. Garden Tours:

    The club promotes garden tours and other garden related activities by organizing carpools to the events.
  4. Phinizy Swamp Nature Park:

    The club supports the park through their membership.
  5. Pendleton King Park:

    Members volunteer in PKP and participate in the fundraising activities.
  6. Tree, Turf and Ornamental Seminar:

    Members serve on the planning committee, coordinate volunteers, and/or volunteer at the annual seminar.
  7. Roadside Beautification Project:

    Members are encouraged to support the Roadside Beautification project of Gordon Highway. One member is on the planning committee.
  8. Master Gardeners:

    Many of the members are master gardeners who provide volunteer service through the master gardeners programs.
  9. Backyard Habitat:

    Many members have gardens that are certified natural backyard habitats.
  10. VA Calendar Collection:

    Members donate calendars each meeting for distribution to patients at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
  11. Columbia County Cares Food Bank Collection:

    Members donate nonperishable foods at the monthly meetings to the Columbia County Cares Food Pantry. The club also gives a monetary donation.
  12. American Cancer Society Donation:

    An annually monetary donation is made to the cancer society in memory of our charter member, Brenda Drake.
  13. Natural Disaster Support:

    Cherokee Rose gives monetary donation to support natural disaster relief programs.
  14. The club continually reviews and selects other worthwhile request for volunteers and monetary donations from the funds generated from the plant swap and door prizes.

Cherokee Rose Supports The Augusta Council of Garden Clubs

  1. National Garden Week:

    Members actively participated in National Garden Week by attending the presentation of the Mayor's Proclamation for National Garden Week, and by taking flower arrangements to the Mayor's staff and to the Westmont Elementary School staff.
  2. Spring Luncheon:

    Members attend the Council's spring luncheon as a group and donate to the fundraiser.
  3. Flower Show:

    Members are encouraged to participate in the flower show at Sacred Heart Cultural Center on April 23-25, 2010.
  4. Executive and Governing Boards:

    Members actively participate on both boards.
  5. Habitat for Humanity Project:

    Members donate plants to sell at fundraising events.
  6. Perennial Gardens at Riverwalk:

    Members work at and donate plants to the perennial gardens.
  7. Pull Top Tabs Collections:

    Pop top tabs are collected at each meeting to support of the local Ronald McDonald House project.
  8. Patrick R. Chance Fund for Neuroblastoma Research:

    Members support the fundraising event by purchasing items offered.

Cherokee Rose Supports The Azalea District

  1. Officers Workshop:

    Officer attended workshop June 24 in Augusta.
  2. Awards Workshop:

    Board member(s) will attend the Awards Workshop on September 24.
  3. Azalea District Meeting:

    Member(s) attend the annual district meeting in October.
  4. Monetary Donation:

    A twenty-five donation will be made to the Azalea District fundraiser.

Cherokee Rose Supports The Garden Club of Georgia

  1. Garden Therapy Christmas Stockings:

    The club donates one handmade Christmas stocking per member to the residents of the East Central Georgia Regional Hospital, and contributes two dollars per member to the GCG garden therapy activities.
  2. GCG Calendars:

    Cherokee Rose supports the GCG scholarship fund by purchasing at least one Georgia Engagement Calendar per member.
  3. Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Poster Contest:

    The garden club sponsors students at Westmont Elementary School in the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Poster Contest. There were several winning posters last year. Two other schools were contacted, but did not submit entries.

Cherokee Rose Supports The Deep South Region

  1. Deep South Region Convention:

    Board member(s) will attend the annual convention on March 7-9, 2010, Natchez, MS.
